sketchy-TacosSketchy Tacos by Meg D. Gonzalez

Teenage artist Mila Gulick travels to Mexico to get away from warring influences and find herself. But life in the land of tacos is a far cry from her sheltered life back home. Mila must find the courage to step out from behind her sketchbook and get to know the people and culture around her. While her host family and the two boys vying for her interest are nothing but smiles, all may not be as it seems.

Soon Mila is questioning her choices and the beliefs she’s held dear. Her heart, her art, and even her safety are at risk as she struggles to find a balance between cultural differences, old assumptions, and strange romance. Will her trip end in disaster or will she find the strength for which she’s been searching?

Excerpt
The scent of sizzling quesadillas, bubbling soups, and slow-roasting meat made my mouth water. They dripped with flavor. I couldn’t wait to taste every single one. On the cordoned-off street, strings of flags crisscrossed the blue sky. Children laughed and kicked a soccer ball through winding legs. Everywhere the colors were so vivid they almost hurt. And the music… Ecstasy filled the notes. It’s no wonder I stopped and stared.

“A group of Folkorico, filled the main stage. Women wore dresses with huge skirts, each a different color. When the dance began, they lifted their skirts high and swished until the stage blurred with scarlet, saffron, tangerine, and amethyst. Their ribbons flew and shimmered in the sun. The raw beauty froze me to the spot.” I wished to pull out my sketchbook, but I knew the skills to capture the fluid movement eluded me.

“Julia stopped with me, but she was impatient. She couldn’t see what I saw. The rest of the class went ahead. When Mrs. Danphe found us, she didn’t scold us. Instead, she watched with me.”

She whispered, “It’s magical, isn’t it?”

MegAuthor Meg D. Gonzalez

Meg D. Gonzalez is a tea-sipping, adventure-seeking, pug-loving kind of girl. She’s crazy for God and wants to share His love with awesome young women around the globe.

She started her first novel at the age of fourteen (it will never see the light of day and that’s best for everyone), but her writing really came alive two years ago after she moved to Mexico. The crazy, wonderful people and culture she encountered inspired the story of Sketchy Tacos.

When she’s not writing, she’s learning to play video games with her husband (she’s horrible), taking hikes in beautiful parks with her pug Pascal, crocheting, and watching way too much TV.

NEVER SAY LOVE by Lauren Hawkeye and Carly Phillips - Surprise Release!

never-releaseday

New York Times bestselling authors Carly

Phillips and Lauren Hawkeye have a surprise for you today - and that surprise is

NEVER SAY LOVE! You can get your hands on sexy playboy Nathan Archer

today!

neversaylove-coverAbout NEVER SAY LOVE

Bound by a vow with his friends, hotel tycoon Nathan Archer refuses to settle down

and tie the knot. His only commitment is to bachelorhood. Granted, that contract

was made when he was 15 years old … and in a treehouse. Still, a promise is a

promise. And Nate takes his promises seriously.

But when cute little Eleanor Marshall walks back into his life, this blast from the past

is no longer the timid little girl he used to know. When Ellie decides to soothe her

bruised ego with one night of hot sex, Nate decides he’s the only man for the job.

He’s wanted Ellie forever and it’s only one night.

But Nate is never going to settle down.

Never say never …

Get a sneak peek of NEVER SAY LOVE:

She removed her dress from its protective plastic, and laid it out on the bedspread.

Bending at the waist, Ellie opened the back zipper of her dress. Strapless, it had a

boned corset-like bodice that splayed into a sensual flare of lace and chiffon ending

at her knees. Studying it, Ellie felt a tremor run through her at the thought of feeling

so ... exposed. Squaring her shoulders, she prepared herself mentally to don the sexy

garment. After all, the nearly sheer dress would help her on her mission. One night

of steamy, no holds barred sex.

“Frigid this, Miles,” she said, reaching out a hand for the dress.

A sound at the door had her whirling around, clutching the dress to her scantily clad

body. Before she had more than a second to gather her thoughts, the door swung

open and she let out a startled shriek.

One that was cut off as a male intruder entered the room, a garment bag slung over

his arm.

At a glance, she pegged him as tall, dark-haired, and gorgeous.

He froze in his tracks when he spotted her. “What the hell?” His voice was rough, like

the burn of whiskey, and tickled at her memory.

Though it had been years, she placed him immediately. Speak of the devil.

Last time she’d seen him, he’d had shaggy hair and a bad boy vibe that made the

high school girls drop their panties with one look. At least, that’s what the rumors

and the girls had claimed. And though he still had the bad boy look to him, now he

dressed in a black business suit that fit his mouth-watering body like it had been

tailor-made for him, which, from what she knew about his large empire, it probably

had.

Standing in the doorway, as if her thoughts had conjured him, was Nathan Archer,

her childhood crush. A tattooed badass who’d made something of himself with a

lucrative chain of trendy boutique hotels. The sexy-as-sin playboy, known for his

revolving door of women, stood in her room, exuding sex appeal and looking as

perplexed as she felt at the moment.

Okay, maybe not quite as perplexed, because he definitely looked her up and down,

taking note of the fact that she was almost naked.

What was he doing here?

She opened her mouth to ask him exactly that—but he beat her to it.

“Ellie Marshall? What are you doing here?” Those storm gray eyes swept over her

again, and since the dress she was holding up in front of her was so skimpy, there

was still plenty of it to see.

His eyes heated as they slid over the creamy expanse of her exposed skin. Even with

her glasses off and being hopelessly near-sighted, she couldn’t miss the flush that

rose to his cheeks.

She blinked, processing the fact that Nate Archer had noticed her as a full-blooded

woman, looking like he wanted to eat her alive.

And she wanted to let him. She always had.

About Lauren Hawkeye

Lauren Hawkeye/ Lauren Jameson never imagined that she’d wind up telling

stories for a living… though when she looks back, it’s easy to see that she’s the only

one who is surprised. Always “the kid who read all the time”, Lauren made up

stories about her favorite characters once she’d finished a book… and once spent an

entire year narrating her own life internally. No, really. But where she was just plain

odd before publication, now she can at least claim to have an artistic

temperament.

Lauren lives in the Rocky Mountains of Alberta, Canada with her husband,

toddler, pit bull and idiot cat, though they do not live in an igloo, nor do they drive a

dogsled. In her nonexistent spare time Lauren can be found knitting (her husband

claims that her snobby yarn collection is exorbitant), reading anything she can get

her hands on, or sweating her way through spin class. She loves to hear from her

readers!

Unwinning News

Alas, I am sorry to say that I will not be able to enjoy the prize I won from Underground Cellar, as reported in this post, nor will I be able to build my cloud cellar (I was really looking forward to building that collection!).

I received an email from them the other day, that said that the state of Illinois (where I live) has decided to stop allowing businesses to ship wine to residents. That stinks. Shrunk my world.

Survivalist Giveaways!

Today's giveaways offer essential things that a person might not always think of, but that would be quite useful in a variety of scenarios.

I found the LifeStraw giveaway to be particularly enticing, as survival is a normal part of the lifestyle in living on the Mississippi River, here. Water is, of course, something that is crucial, and I am always perusing good tools and devices to ensure a supply would be readily available, in any case.

For the ladies, the beauty survival kit is wondrous. A pack of essential items such as these, is always a necessity. What a perfect ensemble! Of course, some men may disagree on the use of "survival kit" for this, but we ladies know it's true!

Then, there is a weekly giveaway from Rayovac. You can be sure that pretty much anything a person wins from Rayovac, would be useful in some type of survival scenario. Also, to put to good use at home!

Today's bonus... well, it's a story of survival.

The LifeStraw Survival Giveaway

Prizes are as follows:

* 4 - LifeStraw Family

* 4 - LifeStraw Go

Days of Future Past ~ Book Blast and Giveaway!

Days of Future PastDays of Future Past by Sally Smith O'Rourke

It is by no means an irrational fancy that, in a future existence, we shall look upon what we think of as our present existence, as a dream. --Edgar Allen Poe

Fate sometimes conspires to right a decades-old wrong. And the 6.8 earthquake that strikes Southern California one warm March night is the fateful event that brings family therapist Ann Hart and trauma specialist Ted McConaughy back together. In search of her cell phone after the tremor, Ann picks up a shard of vintage cut glass from a collection she and her husband gathered during the four years of their marriage. For the millionth time she thinks about the day six years ago when he disappeared on a search and rescue mission in the Sierra foothills.

Sitting atop the shattered crystal, a small silver cigar lighter glistens in the beam of her flashlight. Gently she returns the Victorian piece to the shelf. What does it mean that something she and Ted, her ex-fiancé, bought together survived when Alex’s beautiful glass is smashed to dust? Ann tells herself that it doesn’t mean anything more than glass breaks and silver doesn’t.

Sara Jane McConaughy has never experienced a strong earthquake, and as her father comforts his 16-year-old daughter, his mind is flooded with memories of the Northridge quake in 1994. He was living with his fiancée, his ex-fiancée, and even after all these years he doesn’t know what caused the split, but he always loved her. And he’d been sure she loved him.

Volunteering with the American Red Cross in the aftermath of the earthquake brings Ann and Ted face-to-face for the first time since their break-up, twenty years ago. Angry, flustered, excited, and bewildered by Ted’s sudden appearance and unusual behavior while she’s teaching a small group of people relaxing exercises, Ann demands he leave. Just as excited and bewildered, Ted rushes away. His exit leaves both of them wondering about … everything. The earthquake (or is it seeing Ann?) ignites a series of recurring dreams peopled by total strangers in places Ted has never been.

Accompanied by short lapses of time and sleepwalking, the dreams take a heavy toll on his waking hours. Sara Jane’s concern sends Ted on a quest to discover the cause and find a cure. When all medical possibilities are exhausted, he turns to a colleague, whose diagnosis leaves Ted more baffled than ever. Tom Alderman believes that the dreams are memories of past lives. The lives live in his subconscious, and the cure is hypnotherapy.

After several months of suffering with these increasingly emotional recurring dreams, Ted turns to Ann for help. One of Ann’s specialties is hypnotherapy and since he must be able to trust the hypnotist, Ann is his only salvation. Ann’s agreement to try and help (at the urging of a mutual friend) sends her carefully regimented and calm life into complete turmoil. The garden gate they pass through together sends them on a journey that defies time and reason, forcing them to rethink their past, present, and future. Now, each must reconsider their capacity for love and forgiveness. Things are not always what they seem.

It’s a thriller that reminded me of a mix between Gone in 60 Seconds and the Gallagher Girls books ~Canda Mortensen

My Review

Christy Hadden is a spy. Though she is only 19, earlier experiences motivated her on a fast track through training. Now, she is on an assignment with her team, in New York City.

This book starts out fast-paced, and continues on to be filled with edge-of-your-seat reading. The primary characters are quite "spy-like," giving you just enough information to like, or maybe to dislike some of them, and to get to know them just a bit, yet not enough to let you in on too much of their private lives. In other words, you won't find any "fluff" or "filler" in this book. It is concisely written.

Christy shows confidence and strength in doing her work, yet she is still just as vulnerable as any other teenage girl. Sometimes she is filled with self-doubt, yet, at other times, she can still come off as a bit over-confident in her own abilities. She needs her team, and they need her.

The lines between good and bad are sometimes blurred, throughout the story. This often keeps you wondering if certain characters are good people doing bad things, or if they are bad people doing good things. Though the book does contain some violence, it is less graphic than what you might regularly see on prime time TV, and it stays relevant to the story.

Yet, it isn't all about spy stuff. There are many intricacies. Human relationships, young people enjoying the fun things they do at that age, touching friendships and budding romance, all are lingering on the edge of a dark hole, and must be kept safe. The hardships and calamities of doing such a tough job give it still more added dimension. The heart and soul are still there.

This is not the first book in the series, yet, it still works well as a stand-alone read.

Cindy HoganAuthor Cindy M. Hogan

Cindy M. Hogan graduated with a BA in education and is inspired by the unpredictable teenagers she teaches. More than anything she loves the time she has with her own teenage daughters and wishes she could freeze them at this fun age. If she's not reading or writing, you'll find her snuggled up with the love of her life watching a great movie or planning their next party. Most of all, she loves to laugh.

She is the bestselling and award winning author of the Watched trilogy, a YA suspense series with a dash of romance. She has since branched off to write a mystery, Gravediggers, that won Best YA novel of 2013, a contemporary romance, Confessions of a 16-Year-Old Virgin Lips, and two in a spy series, Adrenaline Rush and Hotwire.

Win Some New Books, for Some Winter Reading!

Perhaps if you have some holiday time off coming, you may be looking forward to curling up with some good books. It's a fabulous stay-cation, if you're into it with just the right book... and maybe a cat, too. You can escape to a whole new world, without ever having to brave the cold.

I certainly wouldn't complain if the whole winter could just be a stay-cation getaway. Maybe we ought to petition for a winter holiday that lasts about four months, to spend the winter in the warm and welcoming climate of home. Well, maybe that wouldn't be too practical.

Even if you have to get out in the cold sometimes, today's sweepstakes offer a great selection of books, with a number of genres to choose from. A win from one of these could give you a great winter getaway, at anytime, even with just a moment's notice!
