A Bit About Regional Sweepstakes

As I was researching this post for today, I came across several regional sweepstakes that were pretty darn good. So, it seemed like a good time to talk a bit about these, as I don't believe I've touched on this topic in the past. For the purposes of this article, I am only referring to this definition as it applies to the United States.

What is a regional sweepstakes?

A regional sweepstakes is only open to residents of specific geographical areas, including only parts of a larger geographical area (such as the United States). The region itself is as defined in the rules of a particular sweepstakes. This can specify certain states, as you see in the sweepstakes listed below.

Yet, a region can also be defined in other ways. A TV news station may have a sweepstakes that is only open to residents of its viewing area, so this may be limited by counties. Other Sweepstakes may have different limitations.

Why are some sweepstakes regional?

A regional sweepstakes may be offered for various reasons. In the example of the TV news station above, it may be to offer a reward for their viewers, with local prizes for local people. This will likely help to keep some of the associated costs at a minimum, as well. Local businesses may wish to donate prizes in exchange for the publicity, and for the good will it generates in the local community.

Another reason is often because a business is offering a prize that would need to be redeemed at the business itself (i.e., free pizza for a year!). In this case, a person would need to live in the area of the business, in order to redeem a prize. It would really stink to win a great prize, and then find out that you'd need to travel over a hundred miles just to get your free pizza. It would be cheaper to go out and buy one.

A third reason for a regional sweeps has to do with the laws governing sweepstakes. Basically, for one example, certain states do not allow certain prizes. Liquor and dairy are in this group, though there are a number of potential items that could be governed this way.

Other governing laws will also come into play. A region may define its own laws regarding sweepstakes, according to its governing body. These are regularly at the state level. Without any specific state or other local governance, then national laws will still wholly apply.

Why enter regional sweepstakes?

For the most part, these types of sweepstakes have better odds of winning. In other words, there will be a smaller number of entrants, so these are just easier to win. Plain and simple.

Aside from this, it might be really fun to win something from your local businesses, don't you think?

With this, I give to you today's sweepstakes, each of which is regional!
